Entry No.2

Fishing on Lord Howe Island

I’ve got a rod, I’ve got a line,I need a fish to make it fine.I’ll cast my hook in the river deep,Where denizens of the water sleep.Awaking them from cosy rest,With bait I’ll tempt them from their nest. They’ll take the lure, I’m sure it’s fate,From stream to bank, then to my plate.

Lord Howe island has it all, from deep rocky shelves fishing for greenback kingfish to great fun on the lagoon jetty reeling in garfish and squid. The natural Geography of the island gifts a myriad of different angling opportunities at all levels of experience. For the purpose of this entry I will stick to one spot per angling discipline but of course there are multiple amazing locations around the island.

A bit about our gear –

Our overarching principle when it comes to fishing gear is simplicity and quality. The Island conditions can be very harsh on equipment and the cost of shipping dictates the need to buy something once and look after it well. We have been guided by the the very knowledgable and passionate team at Otto’s tackle world in Sydney. We call them with a brief and they provide well suited gear that will amplify any fishing experience the island has to offer. We have set ups for all of the categories below apart from the charter’s as they have outstanding gear for travellers to use.

Beach

Blinky Beach is the only surf beach on the island, its east facing, has different sand banks as well as two main rock shelves. Anglers can enjoy salmon, sand whiting all the way up to Trevally and Kingfish. The beach itself is long and depending on tide and wind, there are all sorts of fantastic rips and trough’s to cast into. Island House has well suited gear for the challenge with long rods and high quality spinning reels as well as a great range of tackle including soft plastics.

Rock

The island offers incredible rock locations, not just deep dangerous shelves but also much more mellow rock headlands off beaches and bays. One location that really stands apart for us is “The Haring Pools”. A North East rock shelf with deep craters filled with coral and other marine life. With a heavy set up and some patience you can find yourself battling Kingfish, Tuna, wahoo, and even Mahi Mahi. Shuttles can be organised to this location or you can alway’s set out for the walk from old settlement.

Jetty + Lagoon

The Jetty and lagoon shores provide a fantastic platform for easy access fishing. Don’t be fooled, there is great fun to be had going for Gar fish or squid or even bait fish in preparation for a larger expedition.

Reefs

There is a whole lot of fun to be had on a small boat or even kayak on the lagoon, the island has a vast array of reef systems that can be enjoyed in most weather conditions. The clear water lends itself to sight casting for smaller kingfish, bluefish, or the endemic double header. Of course if the friendly yet pestering Galapagos whaler sharks get wind of your activities it can force you to move around a bit but with the back drop of the island and the crystal clear water below this can be some of the most exciting fishing on the island.

Deep Sea

Local Island operators offer half day and full day trips to many different locations around the island. 27km to the west of the island lies “Balls Pyramid” the largest volcanic stack in the world. Between the pyramid and the island lie’s fantastic fishing spots both trawling and bottom fishing. Depending on the time of year anglers can expect to see Tuna, Kingfish, trevally, Mahi Mahi and assorted billfish. We will guide you depending on your timing and intentions as to which operator will best suit your needs. If you or someone in your group is susceptible to sea sickness it can be a rough day!
